MP attacks ‘charity’ residential freehold owners gaming the leasehold system and cites the Mary Magdalene and Holy Jesus Trust

November 2, 2017 By admin

Yesterday MP Chi Onwurah launched a devastating attack on charity owners of residential freeholds, taking up the issue of the Mary Magdalene and Holy Jesus Trust in Newcastle. She spoke out in the Commons to “expose a situation that combines all the worst parts of Dickensian legal tragedies, Kafkaesque bureaucracy and Catch-22 conundrums with charitable […]

MPs don’t like what they see …

Whistleblowers to Serious Fraud Office ‘wasting their time’

Bad news for LKP, our MP patrons, and anyone else who cares about the Sisyphean labour of trying to encourage integrity and honesty in our corporate governance. The law firm Pinsent Masons has found that 2,500 whistleblowers approached the Serious Fraud Office, but that only resulted in a dozen investigations, the Times reports today. No […]

Why are leasehold house owners mobilising while flat owners suffer in silence?

Around 50 leasehold stakeholders and seven parliamentarians attended the All Party Parliamentary Group on leasehold reform on Wednesday evening. The parliamentary turnout was lower than expected, owing to the election. Sebastian O’Kelly, trustee of the Leasehold Knowledge Partnership, was the first speaker, welcoming owners of leasehold houses from the North West making their second […]

Communities Select Committee lifts the lid on the residential freehold racket

By Sebastian O’Kelly On Monday, MPs of the Communities Select Committee at last flushed out the developers and ground rent speculators who profit from turning ordinary families’ homes into long term investment assets. A murky sector that habitually hides behinds the courts, lawyers, lobbyists and trade bodies finally had to justify its practices and, indeed, […]

NHBC accepts Grenfell cladding bill at Galliard’s New Capital Quay

UPDATE JULY 11: The Times reports that the NHBC caved in days after 220 leaseholders began legal proceedings to force the controversial warranty insurer to pay out. Will Astor ‘tried to nobble reform of ground rents’, Daily Mail claims

The ground rent speculator – and former employee of Vincent Tchenguiz – Will Astor mounted an eleventh hour lobbying effort to derail reform of leasehold, reports the Daily Mail today. The Mail claims that the 38-year-old, who is the half brother-in-law of former prime minister David Cameron, hired London-based PR firm Pagefield through his £1.3 […]

Legal army to stop West India Quay getting … a recognised residents’ association

Giving recognition to a residents’ association at the most exclusive apartment block in Canary Wharf posed the sort of “risks that you see with the trade unions”, the First-Tier Tribunal was told last Thursday. The remark was made by the freeholder’s professional witness, chartered surveyor Bruce Maunder Taylor – and was greeted with guffaws of […]
