APPG on leasehold reform cancelled owing to terror attack on Westminster

An hour and half before it was due to start, the All Party Parliamentary Group on leasehold reform was cancelled owing to the attack on Westminster this afternoon.

So far as we are aware, none of the 70-odd invitees had at that point arrived at the palace, where the meeting was to take place at 5.30pm in committee room 18.

Karen Peel, who regularly attends our events, was in Westminster Square and posted some pictures on the National Leasehold Campaign Facebook page.

We deeply regret that this event took place.

A lot of people made a considerable effort to attend, particularly Katie Kendrick, Heather Truesdale and Les Taylor, of the National Leasehold Campaign Facebook group, who had taken the train down.

Instead, they went to Broadcasting House to contribute to a BBC R4 You & Yours item to be broadcast tomorrow.

    What a travesty in London, then the meeting is cancelled, and I then hear the following:-

    Another Attack on Residents

    When I first learned about Campaign against retirement leasehold exploitation it was my elderly neighbour who gave me a poster at Ashbrook Court back in 2012. The resident was elderly and asked if I could help her as she was over 80 and needed support. I had been posting occasionally on Peverel Action which was excellent until it folded. Sadly the resident has moved to a Care Home. Now we learn the Care Home Sector is falling fowl of similar Unscrupulous Managers and Owners who see elderly residents as Prime Money Makers and they are also using Sharp Practices that include:-
    •Deception
    •Unethical Practices
    •Unexpected Fee Increases
    •Unfair Fees
    •Shock Bills
    •Confusing Costs
    •Failure to Manage Fairly
    •Failure to Deal With Complaints

    The Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a probe after mounting complaints about residents at risk. Charities, Consumer Groups, Victims and their Families have repeatedly warned of Care Home Standards. Janet Morrison, CEO of Independent Age, said: “We called for this review and it is very good news for residents and their families. “It’s very hard for them to know whether they are getting value for money and we regularly hear concerns about unfair contracts and unreasonable fee increases.

    This on top of the recent House Leasehold Sales with values dropping as unscrupulous Freeholders milk the younger and Middle aged section of society.

    Have these unscrupulous people moved on from Peverel Leasehold Flats debacle to House Leaseholds and now Care Homes?
